FLOODED WELLS: If your well casing was submerged by flood waters or if flood waters have come within 50 feet of the well casing, your drinking water supply should be considered contaminated.  Water from a flooded well cannot be regarded as safe for drinking or food preparation until the well and plumbing system have been flushed and disinfected and a water test shows it is safe.  If you must use the well water for drinking or food preparation before the well has been disinfected and tested, the water must be brought to a full rolling boil and then boiled for at least one minute.  Contact the Clay County Environmental Health Department or refer to the Minnesota Department of Health website for information related to flood cleanup and proper well disinfection.  Environmental Health telephone: 218-299-7195 or 218-299-7216.  Clay County does offer free water testing services for those residents whose wells are impacted by the floodwaters.  We recommend testing for total coliform bacteria and e-coli bacteria.  Test kits can be picked up at the Family Service Center, 715 11 St N, Moorhead, Room 105.  The telephone number is 218-299-7777.  Water samples can be dropped off at the same location Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

FLOODED SEPTIC SYSTEMS:  STOP using your sewage system if:

-  Your septic tank or drain field becomes flooded.

-  You can see any raw sewage or “gray matter” on the water surface or the ground as a result of wastewater leaking from your system.

-  Wastewater begins to enter your home through drains or plumbing fixtures.

AFTER THE FLOOD:

-  Do not use the sewage system until water in the disposal field is lower than the water level around the house.

-  Read this document.  Septic Systems and Flooding

-  Make sure to contact a licensed maintainer to pump out and properly dispose of the solids and liquids from septic tank and lift station before using the system again.

STRUCTURE DAMAGE:  Any Clay County resident with residence or other structure damage as a result of flooding should contact the Clay County Planning Office immediately.  Be ready to provide details of the damage and the location of the structure so the County can make a site visit to do a damage assessment of the property if necessary.  Residents located within the floodplain who sustained damage to a structure are reminded that they must get a permit from the Clay County Planning Office before any reconstruction work is started.  Planning Office telephone:  218-299-5002

bullet

Township Officers:  The MnDOT in Detroit Lakes will provide road signs to townships that are in need of them.  Township personnel will have to pick up the signs and return the signs when finished with them.  Contact the Clay County Highway Department for more details.  218-299-5099
