Between 1859 and 1887 steamboats provided an important

A Few Thoughts About Red River Carts.
Between the 1820s and 1870s, these all-wood, two-wheeled, carts were the
semi-trucks of their day, hauling furs south from Canada and trade goods north
from St. Paul. Hear the carts' famous squeak!

photographer was standing and rephotographed the spot as it appeared in 1993.

Valley turned a Northern Pacific Railway construction project into a nightmare
