Clay County Historical Society

NEW! The Clay County Historical Society has recently merged with the Heritage-Hjemkomst Interpretive Center to form a new organization, the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County. Further information to come later.

Welcome to the Clay County Historical Society website! CCHS was formed in 1932 to "collect, preserve and disseminate the history of Clay County, Minnesota." Over the last 60 plus years we've collected tens of thousands of artifacts, photos and documents relating to the county's past. We maintain a museum and research archives in the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, Minnesota. If you're ever in Moorhead, stop by!

On this website you'll find:

  •  Our Photographs on the Web! Seventy-five of our Moorhead photos are now viewable through Minnesota Reflections - an online collection of photos from museums all over Minnesota. Click on "By Collection" and scroll to Clay County Historical Society or search however you'd like. More to come!
  • Membership - how to become a member.
  • Information about our Museum - what's on exhibit and how to find us.
  • Research/Genealogy page, with online materials.
  • A Short History of Clay County.
  • Stories from Clay County's Past: articles from our newsletter on Moorhead's World War 2 POW camp, early aviatrix Florence "Treetops" Klingensmith and more!
  • A current Map of Clay County showing villages, townships and more.
  • Multicultural Midwest - Clay County is much more culturally diverse than it was 20 years ago. Minnesota State University Moorhead professor Maureen Reed's students have interviewed area leaders involved in this important change and donated their research materials to CCHS' permanent collections. Here's their website!
  • County of Many Cultures, Minnesota State University Moorhead professor Helen Scheumaker's American Studies students researched CCHS' artifacts, used our archives and created this web museum. Check it out!
  • Our Bookstore, featuring: The Last One Hundred Years in Moorhead, Minnesota, 1900-2000: A Century of Change.
  • Links to other cool local history sites!
  • Self-guided tour of historic sites along the Red River of the North in Fargo-Moorhead! You must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view the brochure. You can click here to download the free viewer.
